192.168.1.254 — Router Admin Login
192.168.1.254 is the last usable host address in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, and a favourite of DSL modem makers and European ISPs. BT Home Hub, Technicolor, Thomson and a good number of TP-Link and Billion DSL units all answer here.
- .254the last usable host in the subnet
- DSLthe most common hardware type
- ~60stypical time to reach the panel
- 0apps or downloads needed
Quick answer
Connect to the modem, open http://192.168.1.254, and sign in with the details printed on the sticker. BT Home Hub models use the eight-character admin password on the card behind the unit; Technicolor and Thomson gateways commonly use admin with admin. If nothing loads, try 192.168.1.1 — the two share a subnet and vendors swap between them freely.
Which routers use 192.168.1.254
Manufacturers who place the gateway at the top of the range rather than the bottom usually do it so that DHCP can hand out addresses upward from .2 without ever colliding with the router.
| Brand | Typical models | Username | Password |
|---|---|---|---|
| BT | Home Hub 3, 4, 5 and Smart Hub | admin | On the card behind the unit |
| Technicolor | TG and DGA series | admin | admin |
| Thomson | SpeedTouch and TG585 | admin | admin |
| TP-Link | TD-W8961, TD-W9970 DSL modems | admin | admin |
| Billion | BiPAC DSL range | admin | admin |
| Arris | Some DSL and VDSL gateways | admin | On the label |
| 3Com / SMC | Legacy office gateways | admin | admin |
| Alcatel-Lucent | ISP-supplied fixed-line units | admin | On the label |
The label on your own unit always overrides this table. For every other brand, see the full credential reference.
How to log in at 192.168.1.254
DSL gateways in particular can take two or three minutes to finish booting, so give a freshly powered unit time before deciding the page is broken.
- 01
Attach to the modem directly
Wi-Fi or a LAN port both work. On a modem that is also acting as a bridge for a second router, plug your laptop into the modem itself rather than into the downstream device, or the address will be on the wrong side of the network.
- 02
Open the address in full
Type
http://192.168.1.254. Watch the last group carefully: 254 and 245 are transposed constantly, and 192.168.1.24 is a different device entirely. - 03
Accept the certificate warning
DSL gateways are among the least likely devices to carry a trusted certificate. Choose Advanced and continue, on your own network only.
- 04
Find the credentials on the unit
BT hubs print an admin password on a pull-out card at the back, separate from the Wi-Fi key on the same card. Technicolor, Thomson and Billion units generally accept admin and admin. ISP-configured hardware often has a value the installing technician set instead.
- 05
Note the settings before you change them
DSL gateways carry connection parameters such as VPI and VCI values, or PPPoE credentials, that are specific to your line. Photograph the WAN page before editing anything, because a factory reset here can leave you without a connection until those values go back in.
Why the address sits at .254
Every 192.168.1.0/24 network has 254 usable host addresses, from .1 to .254. Vendors who put the router at .1 hand out leases upward from .2. Vendors who put it at .254 hand out leases upward from .2 as well, but never risk running into the gateway, which historically made large DHCP pools tidier to configure. It is a housekeeping decision rather than a technical one, and it means .1 and .254 are equally valid places to look.
The practical consequence is that 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254 sit on the same subnet. A device on either address is reachable from any client on that network, so if one fails it costs nothing to try the other before concluding the hardware is dead.
This address is disproportionately common on units supplied by ISPs rather than bought at retail, which brings a second issue: a fair number of them ship with a restricted panel. You may find the Wi-Fi name, password and connected devices editable while DNS, firmware and remote management are greyed out or hidden entirely. That is deliberate, not a fault, and no amount of resetting will unlock it.
If your unit is running in bridge or modem-only mode, its admin panel is often disabled along with its routing. In that setup log in to the router behind it instead, and take the modem out of bridge mode only if you genuinely need to reach its own settings.
When 192.168.1.254 will not open
The page loads very slowly or half-renders
DSL gateways have modest processors and their panels are heavy. Give it thirty seconds, avoid opening several tabs of the interface at once, and try a different browser if elements never finish loading.
The BT admin password is rejected
The card behind the hub carries two values: a wireless key and a separate admin password. They are different. Use the one labelled admin, and check for confusable characters such as 0 and O.
Nothing responds at either .254 or .1
Read the real gateway from your own device with ipconfig or the Wi-Fi details screen. Some ISPs ship units on entirely different ranges such as 192.168.0.254 or 10.1.1.1.
Settings are visible but cannot be changed
The unit is ISP-locked. Certain pages are read-only by design on carrier firmware. If you need full control, put the gateway into bridge mode and run your own router behind it.
The panel disappeared after enabling bridge mode
That is expected. A bridged modem stops routing and usually stops serving its own interface. Access it again by temporarily disabling bridge mode, or by connecting directly with a manually set static IP on the same subnet.

Common questions about 192.168.1.254
What is the default password for 192.168.1.254?
It depends on the manufacturer. Technicolor, Thomson and Billion units commonly use admin with the password admin. BT Home Hub and Smart Hub models use a unique admin password printed on the pull-out card at the back of the unit.
Is 192.168.1.254 different from 192.168.1.1?
They are different addresses on the same subnet, and usually different devices. Neither is better; manufacturers simply choose where to place the gateway. If one does not respond, the other is worth trying.
Why do DSL modems use .254 so often?
Placing the gateway at the top of the range leaves the entire lower half of the subnet free for DHCP leases without any risk of collision. It is a configuration convention inherited from early broadband hardware.
Can I reach 192.168.1.254 while the modem is in bridge mode?
Usually not. Bridge mode disables the routing function and normally the admin interface with it. Log in to the router behind the modem, or take the modem out of bridge mode temporarily.
My ISP will not let me change certain settings. Why?
Carrier firmware locks pages such as DNS, firmware updates and remote management so that support can rely on a known configuration. A factory reset does not unlock them.
What should I record before resetting?
The WAN page. DSL lines need VPI and VCI values or PPPoE credentials that are specific to your account, and a reset erases them. Photograph that screen first.
