Every router ships with a factory login for its admin panel. Most people never change it, which is precisely why it is worth knowing what yours is — so you can get in and replace it.
One rule overrides everything below: the sticker on your router wins. Since roughly 2018, most manufacturers have shipped per-device passwords printed on a label rather than a shared default, partly because regulators in the UK, EU, California and elsewhere began requiring it. If your unit has a unique password printed on it, that is your password, and no table on the internet can tell you what it is.

What to do when the default is rejected
- Look at the label again. Per-device passwords are often printed in small type near the serial number and easily missed. Take a photo and zoom in rather than squinting.
- Try a blank password. Several brands ship with a username only.
- Check whether the router was configured through an app. Deco, Orbi, eero, Google Nest Wifi and Xiaomi units set their password during first-run setup, and there is no factory value to fall back on.
- Ask whoever installed it. ISP technicians frequently set their own password and write it on the paperwork.
- Factory reset. Hold the recessed pinhole for 15 to 30 seconds with the router powered on. This restores the sticker credentials and erases your Wi-Fi name, passphrase, port forwarding and every other custom setting.
Why the admin password matters more than you think
The Wi-Fi passphrase controls who can join your network. The admin password controls what they can do once they are on it. Those are different problems, and the second one is worse.
Someone with admin access can change your DNS servers so that every device in the house silently resolves domains through a server they control, open ports to expose your NAS or cameras, add themselves to the guest network permanently, or turn off the logging that would show any of it. None of that requires sophistication when the password is admin. Automated malware has scanned local networks for exactly these defaults for over a decade.
Choosing a replacement
- At least 12 characters. Four unrelated words are easier to remember and harder to guess than a mangled single word.
- Unique to this device. Do not reuse your email or Wi-Fi password.
- Stored somewhere you will find it. A password manager, or written on paper taped inside a cupboard. Losing it means a factory reset.
- Different from the Wi-Fi passphrase. If a guest password leaks, your admin panel should not go with it.
A note on legality
These credentials are published by manufacturers so that owners can reach their own equipment. Using them on hardware you neither own nor administer is unauthorised access and is a criminal offence in most countries. This list exists so you can get into your router and change the password — nothing else.
