If you rent a gateway from Comcast, 10.0.0.1 is the address that opens its settings. That applies to the XB6, XB7 and XB8 units that make up most of the current fleet, and to the older Arris and Technicolor boxes still in service. Type 10.0.0.0.1 instead and nothing loads at all — that address has five number groups, and IPv4 only allows four.

Before you start
You must be connected to the gateway itself — over its Wi-Fi or by an Ethernet cable into one of the yellow LAN ports. The admin panel is served by the box in your house, not by Comcast, which means two useful things: it works even when your internet is down, and it cannot be reached from outside your home.
Turn off any VPN before you begin. VPN clients capture private address ranges along with everything else, and 10.0.0.1 sits inside one of them. If you are on a phone, switch mobile data off too, otherwise the handset will quietly fall back to cellular the moment it decides the Wi-Fi has no internet.
Signing in to the Xfinity admin panel
- Open a browser and type
http://10.0.0.1into the address bar. Include thehttp://so the browser does not try to search for it. - If a certificate warning appears, choose Advanced and continue. Local devices rarely carry a publicly trusted certificate, so this is expected on your own network.
- Enter the username admin.
- Enter the password password — unless you or a technician has changed it, or a different value is printed on the sticker on the side or underside of the unit. The sticker always wins.
- Select Login. You should land on a status page listing your connection state and connected devices.
Two logins exist and people confuse them constantly. The one above is the local gateway panel at 10.0.0.1. Separately, your Comcast account credentials sign you in to the Xfinity app and the web dashboard, which offer a smaller subset of controls but work from anywhere. If your username and password are being rejected at 10.0.0.1, check that you are not typing your Comcast account details into the local panel.
When 10.0.0.1 will not open

Six settings worth changing
1. The admin password
Do this before anything else. admin / password is documented on every support site on the internet, which means anyone who joins your Wi-Fi — a house guest, a neighbour with your passphrase, a compromised smart bulb — can reconfigure your network. Under Gateway › Connection › Admin Settings, set something long and unique.
2. Wi-Fi name and passphrase
Found under Gateway › Connection › Wi-Fi. Change both bands if you want a single seamless network, or give the 5 GHz band its own name if you have devices that keep picking the slower band. Use WPA3 where offered, WPA2-AES otherwise, and never WEP or TKIP.
3. The guest network
Xfinity gateways can broadcast a separate SSID that reaches the internet but not your printers, cameras or file shares. Turn it on once, hand that password out instead of your real one, and stop worrying about what visitors bring onto the network.
4. Connected devices
The Connected Devices tab lists everything currently attached with its MAC address and lease. Work through it and name what you recognise. Anything left unidentified after that exercise deserves investigation, and can be blocked from the same screen.
5. Port forwarding
Needed for game servers, self-hosted services and some security cameras. Open only the specific port and protocol you need and point it at a device with a reserved DHCP address, so the rule does not silently break when the lease changes. Avoid the DMZ option entirely; it exposes every port on that device at once.
6. Xfinity WiFi hotspot
Comcast broadcasts a public “xfinitywifi” hotspot from customer gateways by default. It runs on separate capacity and is not a security risk to your own network, but it does draw power and airtime. If you would rather not host it, the option to disable it lives in your online Xfinity account rather than in the local panel.
Resetting the gateway
There is a real difference between the two things people call a reset. Restarting power-cycles the box and keeps every setting; do this first for connection problems. Factory resetting — holding the recessed pinhole for 15 to 30 seconds while powered on — erases your Wi-Fi name, passphrase, port forwarding rules and admin password, returning everything to the sticker values. Only do that when you have genuinely lost access, and expect to set the network up again from scratch afterwards.

Can I reach 10.0.0.1 from outside my home?
No. The address is private and only routes inside your own network. Use the Xfinity app if you need remote control.
Why does the panel look different from the screenshots I found?
Comcast pushes firmware updates that move and rename menus. The functions above exist in every version; the paths may differ by a level.
Do I need internet access to log in?
No. The gateway serves the page locally, so it works during an outage — which is when you often need it most.
