Why ASUS changed the address
Moving off 192.168.1.1 was a practical decision rather than a cosmetic one. That address is the most contested in home networking: ISP gateways use it, other routers use it, and mesh kits placed behind an existing modem collide with it constantly. Shifting the default to 192.168.50.1 means an ASUS router dropped behind an ISP box works immediately instead of producing a subnet conflict that neither device explains.
It also means guides written for older ASUS hardware send people to the wrong address. If your unit is an older RT-AC model it very likely still uses 192.168.1.1 with admin and admin. Newer AX, BE, ZenWiFi and ROG units use this address and have no default credentials at all.
The AiMesh distinction is the other thing worth understanding. Nodes joined to a mesh stop being independent routers: they have no separate login, no separate settings and no separate address. Everything is configured on the primary unit, and the node reset button is only for detaching one from the system entirely. People spend a lot of time trying to reach a node directly before realising there is nothing there to reach.
One feature genuinely worth the visit: ASUS firmware includes a built-in security suite, guest network isolation that actually isolates, and per-device bandwidth limits. If you are already in the panel to change a password, those three are worth ten minutes.
